FEMLEAD: Advancing women's inclusion in STEM

Launched in November 2024, FEMLEAD introduces an innovative model for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to bridge the gender gap in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). By fostering diversity and inclusion through Open Science practices, the project aims to create lasting change across academia and research.

Driving gender equality in STEM

FEMLEAD engages HEIs, policymakers, researchers, and grassroots communities to empower women in STEM. A cornerstone of the initiative is the FEMLEAD Virtual Learning Lab (VLL), a dynamic online platform offering training and resources on inclusive research methodologies. Set to launch by the end of 2025, the VLL will facilitate collaboration and professional growth for underrepresented groups.

Key actions and impact

To achieve its mission, FEMLEAD is implementing a series of impactful initiatives:

  • Training and Capacity Building (by the end of 2025): 125 HEI staff members, researchers, and students, along with 75 stakeholders from the research and innovation sector, will receive specialized training through the VLL.
  • Empowering Women in Open Science (by the end of 2026): 50 female HEI researchers and students will participate in 15 Open Science STEM projects, supported by 3 HEI Open Science Fairs and 5 Info Days reaching over 1,600 participants.
  • Policy Development for Lasting Change (by the end of 2027): Five Policy Labs will bring together diverse stakeholders to co-develop policy recommendations and Gender Equality Implementation Plans for HEIs.

A collaborative european initiative

Co-funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ France / Education Formation Agency, FEMLEAD brings together leading institutions:

  • Université de Montpellier
  • C.I.P Citizens In Power
  • University of Zagreb
  • Institute for Methods Innovation
  • Universitatea Babeș-Bolyai

This collaboration ensures a broad implementation of best practices and sustainable change in STEM education and research.

Shaping a more inclusive future

By equipping HEIs with the tools and frameworks needed for gender-inclusive STEM environments, FEMLEAD contributes to a future where women are fully represented in science and technology. The project’s efforts in training, networking, and policy advocacy will help establish a lasting culture of inclusivity in research and innovation.

We thank all partners and stakeholders who are contributing to this transformative journey. Together, we are paving the way for a more diverse and equitable STEM landscape.
